A little about VDSL

VDSL broadband uses your existing phone lines, but does some clever things to pump up the speeds. Who should get VDSL? Anyone that can’t get fibre who streams Hi-Def Video, likes gaming, or has a houseload of people all connecting to the web at the same time. There’s no installation required, so getting up and running is straight-forward, we’ll send you out a modem, and you plug it in. If you are getting frustrated with Standard Broadband, then definitely take a look at VDSL.

Frequent Questions

What is Slingshot Mobile?

How much faster is VDSL?

A bunch! Typically Ultra-Fast VDSL supports between 15Mbps to 50Mbps downstream and 5Mbps to 10Mbps upstream speeds. Speeds are not guaranteed and will vary from house-to-house, dependent on a number of factors including the condition of copper cables and the distance from the nearest cabinet.

Will VDSL affect my monitored security alarm or medical alarm?

VDSL will typically not interfere with monitored alarms, although we do recommend checking with your alarm service provider to make sure it won't affect the service.

Should I choose Ultra-Fast VDSL or Ultra-Fast Fibre?

If you can get both then you should consider fibre. But, with fibre you may need consent from neighbours or property owners, and installation may involve digging around the property or hanging cables. You will need to be at home for a site survey and then another full day for installation. If this sounds too disruptive, then VDSL may be a better alternative, as the install is much simpler.

Can I switch to fibre at a later date?

Absolutely, if fibre is available and you decide to move to it, we’ll be happy to help.

What is automatic VDSL performance optimisation?

Ultra-Fast VDSL has a feature called "Dynamic Line Management". Sounds pretty fancy (and it sort of is). It automatically optimises the performance of your connection over the first 10 days after it's been installed. It’s just a way to make sure we get your connection working as fast as it can.

What if my speed isn't any faster than ADSL?

Once VDSL has been installed, we’ll fine-tune the new service for the first few days in an effort to maximise speeds. After 10 days if the speed is not better than 15Mbps downstream (for domestic traffic), Slingshot will happily switch you back to ADSL, no worries.

Do I need a new modem?

We will send you a Slingshot Ultra Fast VDSL modem before the installation date and you'll need to have this on hand when the work starts. Have a think about where the master jack point and modem should be located in your house - usually where you need the best internet access, like next to a home entertainment console / TV or desktop computer.
